Why I'm a Socialist

During the 1937-1938 school year I was an eighth grader in the
Riverside, NJ, "grammar school."

My social studies teacher was a very bright and charismatic young man and a proud advocate of Karl Marx and his teachings.

When he told us the stories of how communism lifted Russia from a state of extreme poverty and hardship to one of vastly improved conditions for everyone with its series of "five year plans," we couldn't escape thinking about the horrible depression that we were experiencing in this country at that time.
